A longtime supporter of the Latino Learning Center in Houston, Texas, Carmen Maria Montiel chaired the organization’s annual fashion show in March 2015. Thanks to the efforts of Carmen Maria Montiel and other supporters, the Latino Learning Center sponsors a broad range of human support services for members of the Latino community. In particular, the Center offers vocational training in residential air conditioning and refrigeration.
Designed to address gaps in adult education services for low-income Houston residents, the Bilingual Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program teaches students about the theory and principles of this field. After spending the first two weeks learning about mechanical refrigeration and various system components, students begin operating welding equipment and learning about electricity and circuits.
As a result of the program, the community at large benefits from an increased in trained workers. Students also enjoy a boost in spending power as they advance, which has a positive economic impact on their own communities.
